Our FPSO Repair Service

We have been involved in an offshore project to successfully machine slew ring support faces while an FPSO was in full production. On another contract machined FPSO mooring turret while it was under fabrication in the shipyard – our metrology department and onsite machining department working together to provide continuity and control throughout the project.

Advantages of Metalock's Offshore Services

  • Enhanced operational efficiency: Repairing and maintaining offshore assets helps them to operate at peak efficiency preventing expensive downtime caused by equipment failures – and allows for uninterrupted oil and gas production reducing operational costs and maximising output.
  • Safety and compliance: Regular maintenance and repair is essential when it comes to adhering to safety and environmental regulations protecting your crew and the environment. This helps avert accidents and spills, helping to maintain a safe working environment and comply with strict industry standards.

Our FPSO Repair Experience

Metalock Engineering has been around since the very first FPSO was used in the 1970s. In that time, we have gained specialised expertise that other companies cannot match. We have successfully tackled a diverse range of repair projects, from routine maintenance to complex upgrades.

Common Causes of Maintenance Issues

  • Corrosion and wear: Constant exposure to harsh marine environments – ranging from saltwater to humidity – causes corrosion and wear in FPSO units. This gradual deterioration affects structural integrity and functional components, spotlighting the need for regular inspections and maintenance to prevent significant damage from occurring.
  • Mechanical stress and fatigue: FPSOs undergo continuous mechanical stress due to waves, wind, and operational activities. Over time, this stress can cause fatigue in structural components and machinery. With regular monitoring and repairs, these stresses can be managed to prevent any catastrophic failures.
  • Environmental factors: Severe weather conditions, like storms or high seas, can significantly damage FPSO units. These extreme weather conditions can strain the vessel’s structure and safety systems. For instance, we have been involved in an offshore project where over time bad weather had severely damaged the slew bearing surface of the turret. Repairs were needed while the FPSO was in full production. Constant monitoring and thorough safety precautions were put in place to remove the risk of sparks.
  • Ageing infrastructure: As FPSO units age, their components and systems naturally become susceptible to breakdowns. For example, older vessels may lack the latest technological advancements, making them less efficient and more prone to issues. Regular updates and maintenance are necessary to keep these ageing units operational and safe.
