160MW Gas Turbine Cylinder Boring

The job was to extend the life of the compressor discharge casing of a 160MW gas turbine in the Czech Republic.

Our customer was a UK based provider of independent industrial gas turbine maintenance services for power utilities and independent power producers world-wide.

The problem was some of the blades were loose in their dovetail slots caused by vibration due to compressor stalling resulting from running the machine at a greatly reduced load for prolonged periods.

The solution was to weld up worn fixed blade Rows E1 and E2 in the upper and lower half casings measuring 1.5 metres diameter and 50mm wide.

Then install the portable boring machine and reassemble top and bottom halves and torque tighten the bolts then and re-bore the dovetail grooves rows E1 and E2 back to the original manufacturer specifications to allow the fitting of new blades securely.

Our customer had the blades restored to original dimensions at their own component repair centre in. The blades were returned to site and refitted to the slots, the machine rebuilt and re-commissioned.
